Policy on reprints
Reprints
(a) Sales of reprints
The BMJG recognises that the sale of reprints of articles published in its journals is a legitimate source of revenue. This includes Clinical Evidence Reviews. Reprints of clinical research papers and review articles can be used effectively for direct marketing, exhibitions and seminars, sales support campaigns, and mailing new product campaigns to doctors.
To preserve the BMJG’s independence and ethical standards, the following principles must be observed:
Customers for reprints must specify the number of reprints they want and the purpose for which they will be used.
Reprints may be used for educational purposes and may be given to doctors on request. They may be included in mailings only when the product is licensed and the article describes the use of a drug in full conformity with the product licence.
Reprints may not be used to promote uses for a product or device that is not licensed in the country in which the reprint is being distributed. This does not preclude the use for educational purposes of scientifically sound, balanced educational information about such uses.
Reprints will be sold either with self covers (printed on the same paper stock as the editorial pages) or with full gloss, full colour separate covers, at a premium.
The addition of product prescribing information can appear on reprint covers, however, it must not appear on the reprint itself
Reprints will carry the following notice on the front cover: “Reprinted from [Journal title Date Volume No page Nos DOI URL] “,No additional material such as advertising or company logos may appear on the reprint itself.
Reprints may, however, be presented in a reprint holder—that is, a portfolio on heavy stock with a pocket for the reprint. This holder may include advertising material, including company logos, trade names, etc.
None of this material should create the impression that by publishing a particular article the journal endorses any particular product. The BMJG reserves the right to see the holder before providing reprints.
The holder may not include an image of the front cover of the journal from which the reprint comes.
(b) Permissions to reproduce articles and papers
Permissions to reproduce article and papers will be limited to a maximum of 250 copies and will be granted only to non-profit organisations, such as charities, learned organisations, and academic institutions.
Any permission from a commercial organisation or for more than 250 copies must be referred to the reprint sales team.
Permissions to translate articles will not be granted. Any requests to translate articles will be forwarded to the reprint sales team.
(c) Policy on online translated reprints
Articles that have been translated for the purpose of reprints can appear on the associated online product 3 months from the invoice date of the original reprint sale
Acknowledgement of the original reprint customer will appear alongside the translated article online. Inclusion of company or brand logos is not permitted
(d) Reprints of “Online First” articles
Reprints of “Online First” articles are allowed and are sold at a premium rate.
“Online First” articles can be sold as reprints before they appear in print, and any requests should therefore be referred to the reprint sales team.
