Sally Phillips announced as host for the BMJ Group Awards 2012

The BMJ Group is very excited to announce that its host for the BMJ Group Awards 2012 is comedy actress and script writer Sally Phillips.

Sally is best known for appearing alongside Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones’ Diary as well as leading roles in The Green Wing and Clare in the Community. She now appears in BBC comedy Miranda and is shortly to play a lead role in new Sky 1 comedy series, Parents.

The shortlist for the awards was announced mid-March and doctors and medical professionals only have until Wednesday 23rd May to find out if they are the winners of their category.

Now in its fourth year, the BMJ Group Improving Health Awards has seen new award categories added to the already exciting list which recognise excellence in medical practice. New awards include Working in Partnership, Clinical Commissioning Team of the Year and Transforming Patient Care using Technology.

Also new for 2012 is The Karen Woo Award, sponsored by Bupa, which recognises individuals who have gone beyond their call of duty to care for patients. Karen Woo was a doctor killed in Afghanistan in 2010 whilst working for a relief charity. Her brother, Andrew Woo who is the Chairman of the Karen Woo foundation, is helping to judge this award.

The competition is strong this year with a high calibre of entries in all categories. One new award, the Sport and Exercise Medicine Team of the Year, has even seen entries from several teams involved in the Olympics. This award is sponsored by Technogym, and rewards clinical teams successfully promoting physical activity or engaged in improving the care of athletes.

Other shortlisted entries include:

  • Changes to London's acute stroke services to reduce deaths and disability
  • Tackling drug and alcohol addiction among London families
  • A young doctor setting up vital medical care at Kampala Remand Prison in Uganda
  • A weather alerting service to warn people with lung disease of possible health problems
  • A barcode scanning system to prevent mislabelling of lab specimens

The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony held at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Wednesday 23 May 2012. For the third year, the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS) will be the headline sponsor of the awards and will be joined by fellow sponsors Boots, BT Health, Bupa, ID Medical, univadis, The Health Foundation, Takeda, Tecnoqym and GlaxoSmithKline.

Also judging entries this year are Chairman of the BMA Hamish Meldrum, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners Dr Clare Gerada and doctor and Olympic kayaking champion Tim Brabants. They join BMJ Editor-in-chief Fiona Godlee and BMJ Group CEO Stella Dutton as fellow judges.

Guests include TV doctors from Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and other distinguished guests from the medical community including Dr Andrew Deaner, the consultant cardiologist who ran onto the pitch to lend his expertise when footballer Fabrice Muamba collapsed due to heart failure last month.

Watch out for more news as we get closer to the awards. Table bookings are also now open and will remain so until early May.
